Meritus Scholars Explore STEM Careers Through Summer Internships

This summer, five Meritus Scholars are interning in STEM related positions through four Meritus partner organizations: Mellon Capital, Krux Digital, and NuGEN Technologies.

LiemChristina  Christina Liem (2012), a biochemistry and molecular biology student at UC Santa Cruz, is able to apply the knowledge she has gained in the classroom in her research and development internship at NuGEN. Christina shares her passion for science: “I am more than interested in an opportunity to develop my research
skills at such an esteemed researching facility. My goals in life include studying disease and finding ways to cure and prevent them, just as NuGEN Technologies strives to achieve. I want to discover and demonstrate what I am capable of as a researcher as well as a leader.”

Michelle Linh  CaiLogan copyUC Berkeley student Michelle Linh (2013) and UCLA student Logan Cai (2011) are preparing for their future technology careers by interning as Desktop Service Coordinators at Mellon Capital. Michelle shares her goals for the internship: “My internship allows me to learn hardware firsthand, to deal with basic technology mechanisms, and to understand how computers really work in order to further my knowledge in software programming.”

Sweeney, SydneyStevens Institute of Technology engineering student and Meritus Scholar Sydney Sweeney (2012) is excited to complement her studies by learning new programming languages during her internship at Krux Digital. Sydney also recognizes that the value of her internship goes beyond the work experience. She shares how her internship opens doors for her and her family:

“What is truly the best part of having this opportunity is that when I come home every day and tell my mom what I’ve accomplished and what I am working on, she is proud that I am achieving the dream she
had for me when she came to this country: That I would not have to live a life selling food on the street or working hard laborious jobs. It is very important to me to support her through her long-term illness and to spoil her for her sacrifices, but the best feeling is to see that my mom’s dreams are coming true.”
