Scholar Success Stories

Behind every Meritus Scholar is an amazing story of triumph–accomplishments both big and small that are nothing short of inspirational. Starting this month, each newsletter will feature the joys, accomplishments, and success that one of our Scholars has experienced the previous month. This month we are highlighting 2014 Scholar Zhixiang “Leon” Yuan, future graduate of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

Zhixiang “Leon” Yuan graduated from George Washington High School in the Outer Richmond neighborhood of San Francisco. He and his family immigrated to the US from China when he was just a child, and despite the challenges of language, culture, and family economics, Leon earned a 3.4 GPA in high school.

Since becoming a Meritus Scholar in 2014, Leon has continued to flourish. A business administration major, Leon has improved his grades every single semester and has been a regular participant in Meritus’ career development services. He’s held three paid summer internships–all of which he secured through Meritus–since arriving at college: first as a Social Media Marketing Intern at the Institute on Aging; then as a Technical Services Operations Intern at Lucidworks; and finally as a Business Analyst Intern at Blue Shield this past summer.

All his hard work paid off! Leon just received his first official job offer as an Associate Consultant at Triage Consulting Group. While he still has one semester to complete before he graduates, he is ecstatic to have an offer in hand and is more excited than ever about what his future holds.

As we celebrate Leon’s recent job offer, and all the success he’s earned over the past four years, we know that this is only possible thanks to the support of Meritus’ donors, volunteers, and community members. Thank you to all our supporters for helping to make success possible for hundreds of Bay Area youth!
