On Thursday, August 17th Meritus hosted our first ever Speed Mentoring Night in the Learning Annex of the Wells Fargo building in Downtown San Francisco. The event, which was the mentoring version of speed dating, gave Scholars and mentors a chance to meet face-to-face and organically spark long term mentor and mentee relationships.
Each Scholar and mentor met for 10 minutes before the Scholars rotated to talk with the next mentor. These quick sessions gave Scholars a chance to find out more about the industries that the mentors worked in, get advice on skills they need to pursue a career in that field, and build their social capital by connecting with many professionals instead of just one.
Before the Speed Mentoring got started the Programs team at Meritus worked to ensure that each Scholar had custom business cards containing their name and email that they could pass out and had a list of questions they could ask if they got stuck at any point. They also worked with mentors to prepare them for the unique format of the event.
In the end, the Speed Mentoring Night was a huge success. There were 14 pairs of mentors and scholars, conversations were lively throughout, and mentors and Scholars alike reported that they loved the new format. We are excited to continue to build on this success moving forward and hosting similar mentoring events in the future.
Meritus would like to send a sincere ‘Thank You’ to 2012 Meritus alumnus Ugonma Nwankwo, who is now an employee at Wells Fargo, for making it possible for us to hold this wonderful event in the Wells Fargo Learning Annex. In addition, we’d like to thank all of the wonderful mentors who showed up, including long-time supporter Howard DeBow.
