Your Call: What’s really needed to support young people from poor and low-income families?
On the August 20th edition of Your Call, KALW featured Meritus Scholar and junior at the University of Santa Cruz, Austin Perez. Along with a student from the Students Rising Above program, the show was a conversation about students who are defying the odds by graduating from college. Only 30 percent of low-income students enroll in college right after high school, and just nine percent earn a bachelor’s degree by age 25. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently committed $120 million to classroom technology in Bay Area schools, but what students say they really need are mentors. Where are first generation college-students getting the academic, personal, and financial advice they need?
Listen to Austin share his story and hear the whole conversation here.
