Lincoln High School, 2009
Ventura Community College, 2013 – Nursing student:
I was born and raised in a small village in China where my family and ancestors were farmers. My parents only had a middle school education, but my father acknowledged that he had to do something about his children’s future. He worked hard and borrowed money to bring the family to America.
Learning English was difficult. I did not have a good foundation, and so I did not do so well in high school. At that time, I was lost and feeling useless. I was at critical moment deciding what I wanted to do with my life when the news from Meritus arrived.
The Meritus news shined a light in me and made me feel hopeful again. The scholarship made me realize that high school shaped who I am today. Attending college was an important decision because money was involved. While college life is tough, with the help from my Meritus mentor and coaches, I’m able to overcome everything that is in my way.
Despite taking many units and doing volunteer work, I’m still able to maintain a 4.0 GPA. College is very important for me. Being the first person in the family and in my village to attend college, I’m proud of my achievement. I promised with my grandfather on the day I left my village that I will bring home a college degree to make the family proud. Unfortunately, he won’t be able to see his granddaughter graduate with a degree in Nursing, but he will know in heaven.
